Little River Medical Centre Options: Juniper in Point Cook
We want to be straightforward: there is no Little River medical centre run by Juniper. Our only clinic is at 2 Juniper Ave, Point Cook, about 25 km from the Little River township by road. That is a real trip, so this page explains when it is worth making and when it is not.
If it suits you, book online or call (03) 9395 5566.
An honest look at the distance
From the township, take Little River Road to the Princes Freeway and drive about 14 km towards Melbourne. Leave at the Sneydes Road exit, follow Sneydes Road east and turn north onto Boardwalk Boulevard up to Dunnings Road. In total it is about 25 km. Park at the back of the clinic, entering from Dunnings Road.
Allow extra time if you are travelling at peak hour. For anything urgent, a closer service is the better option, and for an emergency call 000 straight away rather than driving here.
Farming country on the edge of Wyndham
Wyndham City records that Little River was first settled in the mid-1830s and named after the stream that separates Wyndham from Greater Geelong. It is a predominantly rural area, with a small township and land used for grazing and cropping.
The 2021 Census counted about 1,350 people in Little River, with a median age of 42 (ABS QuickStats). Nearly every occupied home was a separate house, and couples with children made up just over half of its families.
Q fever: relevant on farms
Q fever spreads mainly from cattle, sheep and goats. The Australian Immunisation Handbook recommends the Q fever vaccine for people aged 15 and over at risk, including farmers, shearers, stockyard workers and animal transporters.
You need testing before the vaccine: a blood test and a skin test, and the skin test is read 7 days later, so plan for more than one trip. Our Q fever vaccine page explains the steps and the fee.
Making the most of a medical centre trip from Little River
Because the drive takes time, it pays to plan your visit so that one trip covers several things:
- Ask for blood tests at the same visit. Dorevitch Pathology collects on site weekdays until 3:00pm and Saturday mornings.
- Book a longer appointment if you have several concerns, such as a skin check plus a medicine review.
- Use a chronic disease management plan if you live with arthritis or asthma, the two long-term conditions Wyndham City reports most often in Little River and the rural west.
- Ask whether a follow-up can be done as a phone consultation, saving a second trip.
Billing for rural patients
Bulk billing with every doctor applies to veterans with a DVA card, pensioners aged over 65, childhood and adult immunisations and GP care plans. Most other visits have a private fee, which differs slightly between doctors. Check the fees page before booking. Card payment on the day lets your Medicare rebate go straight back to your card.
Common questions
Is it worth driving 25 km for a GP?
For planned care, many people find a regular GP worth it, because the doctor knows your history. For a quick, urgent problem, somewhere closer is usually more practical.
Can I have a consultation by phone instead of driving in?
Yes, phone consultations are available. Ask reception how to book and what they cost. The doctor calls on the day of the booking, though not at a set time.
Can teenagers have the Q fever vaccine?
From 15, yes, if they are at risk, for example helping with livestock. It is not recommended for children under 15, and boosters are not recommended once someone is vaccinated.
